Financial scrollytelling: When data tells its own story

Bringing corporate insights to life with interactive data visualizations

The Restructuring Report explores economic trends and corporate restructuring strategies. With its dense data and technical content, the challenge was to present this information in an engaging, easy-to-understand format that resonated with a professional audience.

The challenge

The target audience, consisting of executives and financial analysts, required clear insights presented in a way that was easy to follow yet still comprehensive. Balancing this need for clarity with the desire to create an engaging, modern experience was key. Additionally, the project involved coordinating multiple teams, design, photo, development, and stakeholders, to ensure all elements came together seamlessly.

The solution

The team designed an intuitive user experience with a clear information structure that guided readers through the content. Anchor menus and well-organized content sections made it easy to navigate complex insights. Drawing inspiration from The New York Times, interactive scrollytelling exhibits were developed to bring the data to life, allowing key insights to unfold naturally as users scrolled. This approach transformed intricate financial information into a compelling narrative. The visual design combined a clean layout with strategic use of color and data-driven graphics to strike a balance between professionalism and visual appeal.

Additional thoughts

The content isn’t excessive, but I’d have preferred a more focused approach with fewer visualizations to keep visitors engaged rather than just downloading the PDF. On the bright side, this project set the stage for a useful template for future projects. The only effort that didn’t pay off was dark mode, it was too demanding for too little impact.

The outcome: Improved retention by turning complex data into a captivating narrative

By blending narrative storytelling with interactive visuals, the report successfully improved content retention and user engagement. The scrollytelling approach encouraged readers to explore insights more deeply, resulting in increased time spent on the page. The project’s design and strong coordination delivered a polished, engaging experience.
